If your customers search for a service 'near me' or in a specific town, local SEO decides whether they find you or a competitor. The map pack, the three businesses shown with a map at the top of Google, captures a large share of those clicks. This checklist covers what matters most for UK service businesses in 2026.
1. Claim and complete your Google Business Profile
Choose the most specific primary category available, add secondary categories that genuinely apply, and fill in every field: services, service areas, opening hours, attributes and a keyword-natural description. Add real photos of your team, premises and work.
2. Keep your name, address and phone consistent
Your business name, address and phone number should match exactly across your website, Google, Bing Places, Apple Business Connect, Yell, Thomson Local and industry directories. Inconsistencies confuse search engines and customers.
3. Build a steady flow of reviews
Recency and volume both matter. Ask every happy customer, make it easy with a direct link or QR code, and reply to every review, positive or negative. Never offer incentives for reviews; it breaches Google's policies and UK consumer law.
4. Create a page for each core service and location
A single 'services' page rarely ranks for everything. Create focused pages for each main service and, where you genuinely serve them, key towns. Write unique, useful content for each, not copies with the town name swapped.
5. Add LocalBusiness schema
Structured data helps Google understand your business details, opening hours and reviews. Add LocalBusiness (or a more specific subtype) schema to your site and test it with Google's Rich Results Test.
6. Earn local links and mentions
Sponsor a local club, join your chamber of commerce, contribute to local news or partner with complementary businesses. Relevant local links are a strong signal for map-pack rankings.
7. Make your site fast and mobile-friendly
Most local searches happen on phones. Aim for pages that load in under two seconds, with click-to-call buttons and short enquiry forms.
8. Track calls and forms
Use call tracking and GA4 conversion events so you know which rankings and pages produce enquiries. Local SEO is only worth doing if it results in booked work, and tracking shows you where to double down.
